9th International Conference on Bisexuality
By Stephen Harvey / Spring Issue
TORONTO - Planning continues for the 9th International Conference on Bisexuality, Gender and Sexual Diversity, taking place in Toronto, Canada from June 15 to 18, 2006. International bisexual conferences take place every other year. Previous host cities have included Minneapolis, Boston, Berlin and Sydney, Australia. We are looking forward to a fabulous conference with dozens of workshops, a dinner / dance, a cabaret and hundreds of wonderful attendees.
The Toronto Bisexuality Education Project, the organizing group for 9ICB, is proud to announce keynote speakers for the conference.
Loraine Hutchins, co-founder of BiNetUSA and co-editor of the landmark anthology Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out will speak on bisexuality and spirituality. Trevor Jacques of Toronto, author of On The Safe Edge: A Manual For SM Play will speak on how bisexual kinky people vary from heterosexual, gay and lesbian BDSM practitioners, as well as males and females with respect to orientation and kinkiness.
People from all over the world have already registered for the conference. Bisexual icons such as Fritz Klein and Robyn Ochs are planning to attend. You can find out much more information about 9ICB by going to www.9icb.org, checking out the ad on page 5 of this issue or by emailing info@9icb.org. Join us in June, 2006!

World AIDS Day 2005
Today December 1st is World AIDS Day. Each year on this day countries and organizations around the world show support for those affected by this terrible disease, hope for the future and education for as many people as possible about the pandemic.
The UN reports over 40 million people are currently living with AIDS, however some of the countries most adversely affected have taken a surprising, if not disturbing path of apathy in the fight against AIDS. In South Africa the Prime Minister publicly denies support of any Anti-Retroviral drugs, because they are not a cure.
In Swaziland the Prime Minister had planned to speak today, however events were canceled by a royal decree. The reason given was a clash with a more traditional festival. Swaziland is perhaps the most affected country in the world with a reported 38% of all adults infected.
Gyllenhall Denies Bisexuality
Bisexual males (or rumored ones at least) have hit mainstream news again.
Jake Gyllenhall, queer cowboy co-star of the much anticipated film Brokeback Mountain, was rather flattered by the buzz fluttering around his alleged bisexuality.
When the recent rumors began circulating, they sure didn?t get this star down. In fact, when asked about the rumors, Gyllenhall tells Premiere magazine, "You know it's flattering when there's a rumor that says I'm bisexual." The 24 year - old actor added, "I've never really been attracted to men sexually, but I don't think I would be afraid of it if it happened."
In the wake of mainstream media coverage suggesting bisexual men do not exist and a few medical professionals claiming those individuals should seek psychological help, this gossip is a welcomed headline for bisexuals all over the world.
Bi Coastal Bisexual Conference Events
Nov 11th - For the first time in well over a decade, no bisexual conference or significant bi presence at an event would take place in 2005. However, separated by only a week and approximately 3,500 miles, two major functions are taking place.
Last weekend Bi Tribune staff members rushed off to 3rd America's Conference on Bisexuality on the east coast and now the action has shifted to the west coast. Creating Change, a conference held by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) drawing over 2,000 people annually, is currently taking place in Oakland, California. From November 9th - 13th, activists and community leaders will be meeting to network, share experiences and build community.
A new feature has been added this year, a Bi Suite (put together by several members of the bisexual community). If you are attending the conference, make sure and stop by and pick up your FREE issue of Bi Tribune and a bi pride bracelet, meet, mingle and check out all of the other great things offered from people throughout the bisexual community.

International Celebrate Bisexuality Day 2005
Mark your calendars, September 23, is Celebrate Bisexuality Day. Since its inaugural celebration in 1999, CBD has been an annual global event calling for greater visibility of bisexuals, thier history, culture or even just recognition of the bisexuals in your life.
Creation is credited to three activists: Gigi Raven Wilbur of Texas, Wendy Curry of Maine, and Floridas Michael Page, creator of the Bisexual Pride Flag pictured above. The three discussed via the Internet the idea of creating a yearly event to celebrate bisexual identity and increase bi visibility.

Yes I Am a Snob

I?ve got a dirty little secret. Don?t tell anyone, but I?m an elitist snob. It?s no secret that I?m a polyamorist. What makes me a snob? There is a line of thought that says that polyamory is a choice, but no better or worse of a choice than monogamy. Hummmmmmmmmph! I can feel my nose elevating as we speak. If you follow that line of logic, polyamory is just a form oh hedonistic gluttony. It may be for some, but not for this high browed ?lover of many.?
Sorry Monogamists, I think I?m better than you! As long as your reasoning for monogamy is built on ownership, property, territory or any other form of possessiveness, polyamory trumps monogamy. In any discussion I'll put forth that polyamory is an advanced form of relationship bonding.
How so? Consider ?storgie?, or ?motherly? love. There isn?t a cap on the amount of love a mother can give to her children. ?Philos?, or ?brotherly love?, doesn?t have limits either. In fact, it?s quite the opposite. Love of your fellow man typically isn?t bound by any sort of number. The common view of Eros, or ?intimate love?, is distinct from the other loves, in that it can only be shared between two people. C.S. Lewis wrote in The Four Loves that, ?Eros love is a shadow of, or even a hands - on preparatory exercise in, Agape love. But it is not and cannot deliver of itself the selfless type of love found in Agape, Godly love.? This limitation on love holds true for monogamy. Polyamory turns that ?limitation? of Eros love on its head.
I love ?many? in a way that doesn?t have limits or caps. So if you see me walking down the street with my head back, my shoulders squared, and a warm smile on my face, you?ll know why.
Why? Because I?m better than you...

If you could have plastic surgery to look like a celebrity would you? Many do and MTV Networks showcases individuals on their show I Want A Famous Face who undergo such procedures. Recently a 23 year old woman chose out bisexual actress Drew Barrymore. However, Barrymore was not so quick to return the enthusiasm when she heard of the young woman?s plans. In fact Life & Style magazine reports Barrymore tracked down the would-be-patient and talked her out of plastic surgery.

Bisexuals Unite Over Biphobia

An article about bisexual men on a popular dating website infuriated some bisexual communities and motivated them to send e-mails and make phone calls resulting in its removal from the website.
The article opens with, "I refuse to date bisexual men," written by Nick Burns, who identified himself as assistant editor for POZ, goes on to give stereotypical reasons as why to avoid dating bi men. The calls and letters from bisexuals put an end to the piece on www.msn.match.com and is beginning a wave of renewed activism within international bisexual communties.

Bisexual Females on the OC

Fox's The OC brings bisexuality and curiosity to television, all of which culminated on tonight's show, airing Thurs., Feb. 10th. Marrisa (Mischa Barton) and Alex (Olivia Wilde) had their first bisexual kiss on tonight's episode, The Second Chance.
Many suspect that this is just another attempt at the "lesbian kiss" to gain ratings. Sweeps months occur during February, May, July and November, and programmers try to impress advertisers by gaining viewers with low - budget stunts such as this.
Alex is bisexual, however Marrisa is just experimenting and rumors tell us that she will not be pursuing a long - term, same - sex relationship.
